One Distillery’s Astonishing Decor Caught My Attention…

Our guide led us down a narrow hallway to a small door. Behind the door was a very narrow, rickety, creaky spiral staircase. I could barely fit my boot heels on the steps they were so small!

Once we were on the first landing, you could smell the bourbon. It was cooler than outside, dusty and dark.

We walked down a long hallway, lined with all these barrel heads like the one pictured above. They were real barrels—just the top 3” or 4” of them—hung on the wall like a picture.

The tour guide told me that’s how they pay homage to barrels that outlived their usefulness.

Bourbon ages in barrels from 2 to 30 years. After 2-3 uses, an oak barrel stops “flavoring” a whiskey. After a few runs, distilleries consider the barrel “neutral” and stop using it. But instead of burning them or selling them, a part gets turned into fabulous wall art.

Then in-between 4 different cabinet shops and about $10,000 investment in the protype… we nailed it!
